Zentangle Starts
January 7, 2015 by Corina
My supplies finally arrived yesterday! Until then I had been using plain old ink pens and the back of business cards to create mini zentangle designs. Now I have the right stuff though so here I go. I created one yesterday and another today. Yesterday I got so wrapped up in doing it that I forgot to take pictures, except for the finished product. Today I stopped often to take pictures so you will all get an idea of how it works. There are no mistakes in zentangle. There is no erasing. There is no planning.
This is the “tile”. To begin, with a pencil you draw a dot in each corner then connect them with a line. No measuring, no ruler. All eyes and freehand.
Next you take the pencil and lightly draw a “string” which is just a continuous line or curve or squiggle or combination. It should begin on one of the lines you penciled in and end on one also.
Now you begin filling each of the areas that was created when you drew the string. Each area will be different.
Keep going til you finish one area…
…and then start another area. You don’t have to work on the adjacent area, you can pick any of the areas to go on filling.
Continuing to another area.
Another couple of areas filled in.
Almost finished!
Ta dah! I will actually be going back to make sure the blacked in areas are completely blacked in as I was working with poor light as you can tell by the pictures!
This one is yesterday’s tile, my first try. I actually like this one better than the second one.
I will be writing a better description, including history of zentangle and its benefits in the coming days. I just thought I would give y’all an idea of what it is and what I’m doing.
Hey, that looks like a lot of fun!

I like the second one best, because of those ferny curls on the right. Do you plan to work in color?

True zentangle is done in black ink on white. I want to learn the right way first then I will dabble in color. I still need to learn shading.
