If we were having coffee today, we would be indoors. It’s a bit chilly out and we are in the middle of a rainy day…rains a bit, stops, rains some more.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that it was a good week. I didn’t do a lot of running around; I mostly stayed home. I did have one day that was stressful. I had to get Anderson after school on Wednesday because he takes an after school class put on by the Y. I also had to drop off an envelope for the PTO Jog-a-thon chair. So I went early. As I sat waiting for Anderson just outside the cafeteria (where his class is) I had a very good view of what was going on. It was not cooking like they were supposed to be doing. There was absolutely no supervision. The kids were racing each other up and down the cafeteria; chasing one another; and dragging each other on the floor. The teachers had their backs turned to the kids the entire time. I was upset but I kept my cool. I told the kids not to run because they could get hurt. When several of them left the cafeteria I ushered them back in. Does this go on every week? The kids are not safe. I tried to tell the school but was told to call the Y because the school is not affiliated with the program, they only use the school facilities. Now I’ve written a long letter to the Y Director, attached photos I took of the chaos, and am waiting for an appointment to go see them on Monday. I don’t like to make trouble for anyone but I really feel the kids were in danger that day and will continue to be in danger if nothing is done about it. That was my “excitement” for the week.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I read a book this week that, at first I was disappointed because it wasn’t what I thought it would be but as I read on, I loved it! It is called Life And Other Near Death Experiences by Camille Pagan. It won’t be released until November 1 but it is one of this month’s Kindle Firsts selections so I got it for free! Kindle Firsts, for those who don’t know, allow Amazon Prime members to select one free book (out of a selection of four) as a pre-release a month before they are available anywhere. If you are an Amazon Prime member, you should be checking it out.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am doing a bit of research for another guest blog post for Part Time Monster. I already know all of it but I want to brush up on it and get names and dates right. At first, I had a lot of trouble with the reading because of my eyesight. Then it hit me that I could, through the Send To Amazon extension on my browser, send the web pages to my e-reader. As soon as I did that, I was able to read all the pages much, much easier. The absence of the back light on the monitors and the fact that I can increase the font size, makes reading a lot more accessible for me. Do you have a Kindle? If you do, you should also get the Send To Kindle extension. It’s a great way to take web pages with you and make them more readable. I now am also sending some blog posts to the Kindle so that I can read it easier and it also allows me to read blog posts when I am away from the internet. You should try it!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that there is not a lot coming up this week. Other than the Monday meeting at the Y, a Wednesday lunch meet up with some NaNoWriMo people, and Thursday volunteering in Anderson’s class, I will just be at home working on my copyediting class, my guest blog post for the following week, and NaNoWriMo prep. It looks like it will be an easy week.
How about you? Are you into Halloween? Do you watch spooky movies for it? Do you dress up in costume? Read horror novels? Or do you not do much for it? I watched a scary movie the other night. I don’t usually but I did. I watched The Omen (the version with Julia Stiles). I thought it was comparable to the earlier version with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, which is the version I was looking for when I came across the newer one. This week I want to see if I can find the original Carrie and the Amityville movies. I don’t really like horror movies but I do like the ones that are more psychological horror movies, although I hadn’t watched one in years until the other night.
Okay, I’ll stop rambling and let you go! I’m sure you have other blogs to visit for coffee. I know I do! But do tell me what is going on with you!

Yes, Halloween is one of those holidays when watching is fun even if you are not a part of it!

You’re really busy. Camille Pagan’s new book sounds interesting. I’ve added it to my wish list. I throw a Halloween costume party almost every year. I still have to decide what I’ll be. I wanted to be Wednesday Addams but my son pleaded with me not to dress up as her as its too scary. I may buy a unicorn onesie and call it a day. I plan on going to a few thrift stores and see if maybe I get lucky there first.

I want to be a witch but my grandson is terrified of witches. I might see if I can find my white and gold witch’s hat and go as a good witch!

Any holiday that features candy is good to me. I’d trick or treat for some Twix! 🙂

I like the fun aspects of Halloween: dressing up for our local parkrun, and I have fond memories of Halloween parties when I was a boy. Ducking for apples and so on.
But I really despise the Trick or Treat gig. For me, it is nothing more than legalised begging with menaces. Call me Mr Grumpy if you like!

I’m going to have to get the book! But then my problem becomes finding time to read it! I can’t even find time to write a post to the blog or read other blogs lately! Frustrating!! I need to delve into the Amazon prime benefits and use them. Got the fire stick and now have to get it set up. Can’t get my mind geared for anything…oh well..it is what it is. 🙂

Ahh the chill of fall, there is just something magic about the crisp air as it fills your lungs! I love this time of year, and very soon I will be one of those scary guys spooking those brave enough to take a haunted hayride!
Enjoy your week, see you soon.

That really doesn’t sound safe—the kids, and the parents/guardians of the other kids, are really fortunate that you took the time and trouble to document what was happening and bring it to the attention of the program. Yikes.
The Kindle is amazing, isn’t it? If I didn’t have one, I would no longer read for pleasure, due to the vagaries of my failing eyesight…I can’t bear the weight of glasses on my face, and if my contacts are in, I can’t read printed books comfortably. Being able to change text size to suit whatever my eyes are doing has been such a huge benefit. Handy tip: if you ever have occasion to acquire a different computer, try one with a touch screen. They are a-ma-zing, and if you use a laptop, they’re not significantly more expensive. You can expand and contract the screen just like you do on a smartphone, which means of course that you can enlarge text on webpages. It’s a great invention, and it’s also fabulous for scrolling, which you can do by running your finger down the screen, also like you’d do on a smartphone or tablet. I have become so accustomed to the convenience of this that it freaks me out when I can’t do it on someone else’s computer! If you use the mouse a lot, the scrolling feature is such a nice rest for the hand and wrist…I do a lot of scrolling back and forth in documents, etc. while editing, and I’ve noticed that my mousing hand aches a lot less.

My daughter and I have an appointment with the Y program directer early tomorrow morning. We’ll see how they address the situation.
I recently had to get a new laptop after the old one (7 years old) gave out on me. I did get a touch screen. It’s sometimes frustrating but that might be that I haven’t set it up correctly. For the most part, though, I love it. I can enlarge photos and text quite easily. I haven’t yet been able to adjust the brightness to my satisfaction so its a chore to read on it for more than a half hour or so, but it’s quite an improvement over the last one that had no touch screen!

I love these “If we were having coffee” posts.. I think I may just have to join in.
How aggravating to arrive and see our kids running around willy-nilly with nary a care from the caretakers. This is how my son broke his arm in Grade 2. He was the second of 3 to break his arm on the same school yard slide and climby-thingies…. I was not pleased, to say the least.
