She did it right there.
For several years she had been emailing an old beau from a previous lifetime. He had found her at a moment when she was feeling alone, unwanted. The email subject from the strange address read “Is that you?”
It was. That was the start. That relationship had made her smile and feel wanted. For years.
It took a long time and a lot of excuses but she finally realized this was no relationship. So, right there, in the middle of the library, she clicked on “Delete Forever”. The entire “relationship” was gone.

Thank you to Rochelle for the photo prompt at her weekly Friday Fictioneers post. She gives a photo and challenges readers to come up with a 100 word story to match the photo. Give it a try. It’s fun!
I guess we can say that is one perk of social media. I enjoyed your story!

Dear Corina,
There’s a novel between the lines of your well layered hundred words. I could feel her pain, loneliness and the trepidation over finally hitting the delete key. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

I have often thought of writing that novel. I think one day I will. I just have to figure out how to distance myself from the characters.

For years I had been searching for an old girl friend on social media. Finally found out she lived in the dark ages, didn’t use the internet at all. We reconnected by phone and I went to visit her in person many times. She had changed drastically but I could still see the girl I once loved. She was in a relationship and we became good friends. She died of a drug overdose in 2002. When we were young she was so straight-laced, wouldn’t even be near drugs or those who used them.

People change. They often don’t see the change in themselves but others do. Were you glad you had found her?

Are you kidding? And even though the ending was not what I had expected, I wouldn’t have changed a thing- except for her untimely death.

I loved the story. Years of feeling better about herself and smiling. However, it was only a virtual relationship and it is better for her that she ended it. I thought she was going to find out after years that she was the recipient of a mistaken identity e mail.

Now that was another possibility! Thank you for visiting!

Very thought provoking. I guess much depends on the expectations we put into online connections and re-connections.

You’re right…if we put all our thoughts, feelings, and expectations into those virtual relationships, then there’s nothing left to show us the difference and when it all falls apart, it hurts just like when a real life relationship does.

Cyber divorce is just as ethereal as cyber relationship.
Good piece.

I guess you’re right. I hadn’t thought of it that way but yes, it’s very much like a real life divorce! Thank you for stopping by.
