One of my favorite places on earth is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Since I was a child, it held a special place in my heart. It symbolized a gateway to lands unknown [to me]. I grew up in San Jose, 45 minutes south of San Francisco. We would drive up there at least once a month. The times we crossed the bridge were special times. At that time, the Vista Point that exists today (on the northbound Sausalito end of the bridge) wasn’t there. People drove north and then pulled off to an unpaved dusty spot. We never went past there. We would get off, look at the bridge, take pictures, then we’d head back south.
I always wondered what lay beyond that bridge. I didn’t know what it was but I knew that some day it would lead me to a wonderful place. I think that’s why the bridge has always held a fascination to me. It’s almost magical. Every time I cross the bridge, I want to stop. I do stop as often as I can.
The other day, I was headed to San Jose to see my son and I was in a hurry. I wanted to stop at the Sausalito Vista Point but I was heading south. I wanted to get a picture. I knew it would be dark when I came back up so I stopped on the Sausalito south-bound side. Not my favorite view. I needed to see the bridge from the other side. I grabbed a jacket from the back of the car and my camera. I took the pedestrian/bike trail under the bridge to get my fix. Most tourists don’t get to see the under side of the bridge. So I took a picture for y’all. Let me tell you that it is a little scary down there. You can hear and feel the cars going just a few feet above your head and you can see the dirt and water where you’d land if the wood gave way beneath you. The wind is gusting. It’s dark. Yet it is magical. At least it is to me. It’s a part of my Golden Gate Bridge and as such, it is magic. I will never tire of it.
well i must say i have never been privy to the underside of the bridge myself… so i thank you for your photo… good to see you back!!

That is a very cool picture! I love the darkness and fuzziness of the fence in contrast to the bright girding in the distance.
Amazing . . .
Hope you had a nice trip!
